Company History

Our history ?
St John of God Health Care was formed in 1989 when the Sisters of St John of God brought their nine hospitals in Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales together as a single entity.

But our roots go back much further than this. It all began when the Sisters of St John of God came to Australia from Ireland in 1895 during Western Australia's gold boom. They answered a call from the Bishop of Perth to come to Western Australia to provide much needed nursing care. By 1900, the Sisters of St John of God were nursing and teaching in Perth and Kalgoorlie.

?Over the following decades, they established more hospitals and schools in Western Australia, several hospitals (including a mental health hospital) in Victoria and one hospital in New South Wales. Apart from the two hospitals in Perth (Subiaco and Rivervale), all of the St John of God hospitals were in regional centres, providing services where they were needed most. The Sisters withdrew from teaching in the 1930s.

By the 1980s, major changes in medical science, government policies and Catholic Church thinking led the Sisters to realise a multi-hospital approach was needed. After much discernment, St John of God Health Care was born on 3 September 1989.

St John of God Health Care has continued the Sisters of St John of God's legacy of responding to need. Since 1989, we have acquired several hospitals and services in Australia and New Zealand, and have established partnerships in Tonga and Timor Leste.

Each hospital and service has its own history and heritage which forms part of the bigger St John of God Health Care story.

St John of God Health Care continues to be a leading private health care provider operating hospitals, home nursing, rehabilitation and disability services, as well as a range of social outreach and advocacy services in Australia and New Zealand.
