This role combines high-level strategic and operational responsibilities with direct clinical duties, and is accountable for clinical governance, workforce development, cross sector collaboration, education, and quality and safety improvement. This role will support child and adolescent mental health service development, workforce planning, and clinical governance initiatives across the directorate.
The Director Adolescent Mental Health fulfils a range of clinical, administrative, teaching and research roles. Administratively, the Director manages the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) Adolescent Mental Health Service including a 12-bed inpatient unit.
The Clinical Lead Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Metro North Mental Health (MNMH) will provide leadership and support across MNMH Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS). This is an evolving and integral part of our leadership team. The Clinical Lead will work collaboratively with Clinical Directors across multiple MNMH sites to ensure consistent, high-quality child and adolescent mental health service delivery.
Requirements
Leadership
- Provide advanced psychiatric leadership to CYMHS outpatient and inpatient services across all MNMH sites to ensure that the optimal models of CYMH care provision are available across MNMH.
- Deliver clinical oversight for complex and high-risk cases, including active participation in multidisciplinary case reviews, formulation and treatment planning, and chairing complex care reviews.
- Model professionalism, compassionate leadership, and ethical decision-making to set behavioural and performance standards for all staff.
- Mentor and supervise psychiatrists, registrars, and multidisciplinary clinicians across MNMH CYMHS services, promoting professional development and clinical excellence.
- Role model performance accountabilities, promote a positive culture of respect and psychological safety, and drive learning and improvement to support service responsiveness in a context of increasing demand.
Strategic and operational planning
- Collaborate with Clinical Directors, Team Leaders and executive leadership to support integrated service delivery, system design and innovation.
- Lead development, review and continuous improvement of systems, clinical pathways and quality processes to ensure clinical indicators and operational standards are met.
- Promote and lead a culture of safety and quality and contribute to organisational safety and quality improvement initiatives.
- Advocate for and implement evidence based, consumer centred and culturally appropriate models of care.
- Participate in development, evaluation and reporting of quality improvement projects and service performance indicators.
Human resources and workforce development
- Contribute to MNMH CYMHS medical workforce planning, recruitment, rostering and succession strategies.
- Support structured supervision frameworks, training, and continuing professional development for medical and multidisciplinary staff.
- Provide input to performance management processes where required and support clinician wellbeing initiatives.
Collaboration and stakeholder engagement
- Initiate and lead professional collaboration, negotiation and service integration with internal stakeholders and external partners to reduce duplication, achieve agreed outcomes and improve care continuity.
- Engage with primary care, education, child protection, disability and community sector partners to strengthen coordinated care pathways and transitions.
Education, research and regulatory compliance
- Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) as required by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and maintain registration standards under the Medical Board of Australia.
- Promote and participate in research, service evaluation and academic partnerships to support evidence generation and translation.
- Maintain knowledge of relevant Queensland Health policy, mental health legislation and national standards, and ensure local practice aligns with these frameworks.
- Lead the training and development of junior medical workforce and other clinicians on CYMHS psychiatry
Clinical practice and operational duties
- Undertake significant direct clinical responsibilities negotiated with the Clinical Director RBWH, balancing leadership and clinical commitments.
- Ensure the delivery of best practice, recovery-oriented care to all patients managed by the CYMHS within MNMH, within the scope of professional standards and organisational resources.
- Deliver evidence informed, high-quality clinical care to adolescents and their families
- Participate in the ECT Roster and afterhours on call roster at RBWH and provide relieving clinical duties as required to sustain service continuity.
- Ensure timely preparation of Mental Health Review Tribunal reports and attendance at Tribunal hearings when required.
