Consultant Psychiatrists – Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Service
Shape the Future of Mental Healthcare in WA
WA Country Health Service is seeking Consultant Psychiatrists to join the Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Service (KMHDS), delivering critical care in one of Australia’s most culturally diverse and breathtaking regions.
The Roles
Broome Hospital
Type: Permanent Full-Time or Fixed-Term Full-Time (80 hours/fortnight).
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead a multidisciplinary team at the Broome Mental Health Unit, overseeing emergency mental health services and inpatient care.
- Provide mentorship to psychiatry registrars and junior doctors, fostering professional growth and excellence.
- Deliver culturally sensitive care to a predominantly Aboriginal patient population, working collaboratively with Aboriginal Liaison Officers.
Kununurra Hospital
Type: Fixed-Term Full-Time until 30 June 2027, with potential for extension or permanency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver mental health services across East Kimberley, including Kununurra and remote communities.
- Lead telehealth and outreach services while mentoring a multidisciplinary team.
- Provide culturally safe care, working closely with Aboriginal Liaison Officers to align treatment with local cultural values.
- No current on-call requirements, with input welcomed for future service delivery models.
About the Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Service: The Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Service (KMHDS) provides specialist mental health and substance use treatment across the region. With a consumer-focused and recovery-oriented approach, KMHDS offers flexible, culturally competent care for people of all ages.
Key programs include:
- Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services
- Adult and Older Adult Mental Health Services
- Community Alcohol and Drug Services
- Broome Mental Health Unit and Community Recovery Centre
- Aboriginal Mental Health Workers play an integral role within the team, ensuring services are culturally appropriate and accessible for Aboriginal people and communities. The service places a strong emphasis on collaboration, innovation, and respect for cultural diversity.
